Building access codes (federal and state) impact all aspects of construction. Now more than ever disability access laws create a greater concern for the sport floor industry. Why? Because gym/sport floor modernization projects that have an increase in floor height of more than ½” from the original substrate require some form of transitional access from the path of travel to the new floor.

Proper installation of raised wood floors, especially in retrofit and replacement projects, are problematic when faced with interpreting federal and state ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) access compliance laws. Problems occur around the proper treatment these vertical rises from variations of the new flooring material to the existing or old floor substrate. Vertical floor edge treatment is not only required to avoid tripping hazards, but also essential for federal and state access code compliance.

Traditionally when there were small variations in height in new flooring projects, applying small floor reducers was left to the discretion of the flooring contractor or installer.
